RENEWABLE ENERGY
Landfill gas is a resource, which should be profitably harnessed - essentially combining utilisation with effective gas management. The methane produced by landfill sites is used as a fuel driving a generator to produce renewable electricity turning a potential liability into a lucrative resource. Natural Power Limited as part of the ENER·G Group is the UK's leading independent expert in the exploitation of landfill gas and has a strong track record in delivering innovative and cost-effective solutions for its customers.

What makes ENER·G Natural Power the UK's leading independent landfill gas generation company?

ENER·G adopts a unique approach to the recovery and utilisation of landfill gas.

Generator utilisation
Modular generator units (from 300kW to 1150kW) and a 'hire fleet' approach, ensures, where grid connections allow, a mix of generators can be cost-effectively used - even for short periods - to capitalise on peaks or manage gaps in site gas production

This flexible use of movable generators means we can maximise use of the gas resource on landfill sites and extend the period of gas utilisation - offering substantially reduced landfill aftercare costs.

Procurement Options
Generators can be leased or purchased by customers - ENER·G then provide an Operations & Maintenance service for both engines and gas field as required.

Customers mostly prefer ENER·G to take the project risk and to finance, build and operate the scheme - in which case the customer will receive a risk-free share of the electricity income.

Customer Focus
Our nationwide Operations & Maintenance infrastructure allows us to develop standalone 300kW sites. This provides owners of old or small landfill sites with an opportunity to put existing gas collection systems into use, reducing aftercare costs and, in some cases, turning the site into a profit centre.

ENER·G get involved at site immediately we are committed to actively manage the gas field to optimise utilisation and ensure effective migration control.

ENER·G enable the landfill operator and owner to exploit the full financial and regulatory benefits.

Using the "selling power" of our growing portfolio we gain best value for renewable electricity generated - including any associated 'green' benefits.

Pollution Prevention and Control
ENER·G's landfill gas utilisation equipment conforms to all regulatory requirements under the PPC Regulations.

ENER·G is committed to improving environmental performance of its business and continually develops its landfill gas utilisation equipment so that it remains at the forefront of environmental technology. This includes:

  • Enclosed in acoustic containers 110% fully bunded engine and transformer enclosures
  • All engines are able to comply with the emissions standards set out by the
  • Environment Agency in the 'Guidance for Monitoring Landfill Gas Engine Emissions'
  • All engine units are fitted with extended exhaust stacks and monitoring locations with permanent access platforms to allow emissions monitoring.
  • Innovative in-situ cleaning of engine combustion chambers to maintain efficiency and emissions compliance in a very cost effective manner.
  • Silicon removal from lube oil with centrifugal clarifiers
  • All equipment is ATEX compliant to current regulations

ENERGY FROM WASTE
Energy from waste, as an alternative to fossil fuels, provides an important contribution towards the reduction in landfill disposal and global warming.

The ENER·G Group employs clean, sustainable, energy efficient technologies, and has a strong history of providing more sustainable solutions to environmental problems. The Groups proven gasification and pyrolysis technologies further demonstrate its innovative approach.

Gasification Technology from ENER·G
Based in Norway, ENERGOS AS is the ENER·G Group's specialist in gasification technology and is a leading supplier of small-scale energy from waste plants, which provide a local solution for local waste problems. It's proven and patented technology is designed to minimise emissions. ENERGOS plants are sized for local applications, converting between 30,000 and 80,000 tonnes per year of household, industrial or commercial waste into more environmentally friendly electricity and/or heat - delivered for local use.

"The claim by Energos that the process is 'environmentally friendly' is backed up by the very low pollutant emission levels measured at Hurum and Averoy. These emissions are probably the lowest measured anywhere for this type of process, particularly the NOx figures which can only be achieved by competing technologies with the application of end-of-pipe de-NOx systems. These emission levels have been achieved by paying significant attention to the process control of the two-stage combustion process and the management of the difficult products of the combustion process within the downstream energy recovery and gas cleaning process" Juniper Consultants, Biffa Waste Services Ltd, Future Perfect Report 2003

Gasification Solutions
An alternative to mass-burn incineration!

ENERGOS technology provides a well-proven solution for the conversion of waste that cannot be recycled. ENERGOS plants offer:

  • Lower capital costs
  • Faster construction time
  • Lower waste transport costs
  • Minimal impact on the local environment
  • Integration into regional recycling strategies

Gasification Technology

ENERGOS' thermal conversion process reduces the need to invest in high-cost flue-gas cleaning systems, which makes ENERGOS technology a cost-competitive, efficient and environmentally compliant solution for local waste treatment.

The ENERGOS thermal conversion unit consists of two chambers:

  • Primary chamber - for gasification of the treated waste
  • Secondary chamber - for high temperature oxidation of the syn-gas produced in the primary chamber

The hot flue-gas from the secondary chamber is passed through a heat recovery stage.

The ENERGOS design makes it possible to simultaneously achieve:

  • Low carbon content in the bottom ash (less than 3%)
  • Low and stable Nitrogen Oxides (NOX), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC)

In the UK, for example, the ENERGOS plant is an Advanced Conversion Technology and the electricity produced from the biomass fraction of the waste will qualify for the UK Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs).

PYROLYSIS TECHNOLOGY FROM ENER·G
ENER·G deliver clean, sustainable and energy efficient technologies, and have a proven history in dealing with waste at landfill gas sites and converting it into renewable electricity.

ENER·G are developing groundbreaking technology that enables the use of the well-proven pyrolysis process in conjunction with a high efficiency reciprocating engine. Such a package would have a great number of applications in the energy from waste industry in Europe, and other industrialised countries.

The Pyrolysis Process

The Pyrolysis process has the ability to produce a clean, high calorific value gas from homogeneous waste and biomass streams. This gas will typically have a calorific value of 22 - 30MJ/m3 depending on the waste material being processed The hydrocarbon content of the waste is converted into a gas, which is suitable for utilisation in either gas engines, with associated electricity generation, or in boiler applications without the need for flue gas treatment.

In UK, for example electricity produced qualifies for the UK Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs). The pyrolysis plant is intended to act as a local small-scale waste disposal solution and can be utilised in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) applications to efficiently produce both electricity & heat.
