Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme

The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) is a new regulatory incentive, administered by the Environment Agency. CRC is aimed at reducing the CO2 emissions of medium to large UK-based organisations and businesses. This is vital in achieving our overall targets of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 by at least 80% compared to the 1990 baseline.

If your company has one or more half-hourly (HH) electricity supplies settled on the HH market and consumes in excess of 6,000MWh (roughly equating to a £500,000 annual electricity spend) in 2008, you will be required to purchase enough carbon allowances to cover your annual CO2 emissions.

The CRC is designed to account for emissions outside of the existing Climate Change Agreement (CCA) and EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and encourage energy efficiency across UK business and industry.

If your company does not have one or more half-hourly (HH) electricity supplies settled on the HH market, you will not be involved with the CRC. If you do have one or more half-hourly (HH) electricity supplies, but your 2008 consumption is less than 6,000MWh, you will have to submit details of your HH meters and 2008 energy consumption to the scheme Administrator, but will not be involved in allowance purchasing. If you do have one or more half-hourly (HH) electricity supplies and your 2008 consumption exceeds 6,000MWh, but you are not a single entity organisation, or the highest ‘parent’ of a Group of companies, your annual emissions will count towards your Groups total. You will need to collate annual emissions data and information for submission by the Groups highest parent.
